By having People Line manage your IP telephony services, you immediately save on administration costs. Managed IP telephony further reduces leased telephone line costs or the need to purchase an expensive PBX or Key System.

Hosted VoIP sofswitch and gatekeeper services work like a PBXs, managing call routing, voice messaging and conferencing functions. IP phone handsets that are rich in call management features can be connected to a hosted VoIP softswitch, much like telephone sets are added to a PBX.

The difference is that softswitch and IP Phone sets are less expensive on a per seat basis, and calls are routed over IP. The latter means that phones can be added to your telephone network anywhere there is a broadband Internet connection. You can thereby extend the geographical coverage your PBX beyond your building. Imagine making free calls between users that may be located thousands of miles away by dialing an extension.

For customers that have legacy PBXs / Key Systems, People Line's solutions can be used to complement these systems. Customers can make better use of existing telephone lines by adding a small VoIP gateway(s) to their PBX. The VoIP gateway(s) can be registered to a hosted People Line VoIP gatekeeper, which provides the customer's gateways interconnectivity to People Line's network and Clearinghouse carrier network.

The advantage of such a deployment is that the PBX is used more efficiently and it can remove the necessity to upgrade an overloaded Key System. Calls would be rerouted over IP rather than the Key Systems main telephone lines, which would free up telephone lines for other uses (i.e., handling more incoming calls from customers). Customers are also interconnected to the World and can save on long distance by leveraging People Line Clearinghouse carrier network.

If the IP Phones and VoIP gateways reside on a geographically dispersed VPN, the hosted VoIP sofswitch and gatekeepers allow you to centrally manage gateways, activating and deactivating gateways as needed, and assign routing actions for calls between the gateways.

Routes can be configured to forward calls from legacy telephone systems over IP between regional gateways to gain PSTN-toll-by-pass between regions. Hosted softswitches/gatekeepers provide the further advantage of being registered to People Line's Clearinghouse, which will route Off-VPN traffic to carriers to deliver calls. The Clearinghouse provides secure connectivity to its carriers partners, and it provides call details of all calls placed via People Line's hosted gatekeeper and the customer's gateways.

We could provide "local long distance" as B2B and customer service feature. For example, a small business in Whistler, BC, could subscribe for a Vancouver, BC, phone/fax number that would terminate calls at the high speed Internet connection in its Whistler office. Its Vancouver customers would place no-cost local calls instead of dialing long distance. The Whistler business could also subscribe to a IP Phone or softphone (PC2Phone) service to place calls via People Line's local Vancouver exchange to have no-cost calls from Whistler to Vancouver.

People Line's VoIP services further allow companies with branch offices to interconnect small VoIP (remotely installed) gateways to a hosted People Line VoIP gatekeeper that is registered to People Line's Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse allows voice calls to be securely carried between head office and its branch offices, peer-to-peer over the Public Internet.

The benefit is that it saves a company from extending its VPN or from building an expensive, geographically dispersed Private Network (VPN) to offer peer-to-peer VoIP services. Companies will gain PSTN-toll-by-pass to carry calls point-to-point at a fraction of the cost.

Similarly, for B2B, suppliers can better serve their customers by interconnecting calls via the hosted gatekeeper and Clearinghouse. The customer's gateway can be registered with the Clearinghouse and/or supplier's hosted gatekeeper to authenticate, route and securely connect calls between the supplier and customer. The supplier not only reduces its telephone calling costs, but also the calling costs of its customer.

People Line managed services are hosted at secure, 24x7 Network Operating Centers (NOCs) in Los Angeles and Vancouver.

Security and privacy affect the integrity of, and access to, stored and transmitted data elements within a system, in this case, within the People Line Network. Stored data includes user information, including ID and password, for example, as well as "traffic" message data (to, from or between users), system files and records, and transaction data, such as CDRs. Transmitted data includes the above, plus system message data involved with call control, user authentication or transaction authorization, and system status reporting messages. Three main tools are used within the People Line environment - access control, encryption, and protocol compliance.

  • Access control requires each user to submit an identity and corresponding password, which are used to verify the authenticity of the user.
  • Digital Certificates, widely used within the PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) environment, provide means for securing data integrity, of effecting user and device authenticity with digital signatures, encryption, and other facilities.
  • Protocol compliance is a requirement that data message structure, timing parameters and other aspects of stored or transmitted data, adhere to predetermined specification. SSL - Secure Sockets Layer - communication is applied to all connections with user-provided, SSL-capable web browsers.

SSL includes data encryption facilities, and is widely used for online banking and similarly sensitive transactions. People Line also applies SSL on transmissions between gatekeepers, for message data transmission and for transaction setup and reporting data exchanges. All Open Settlements Protocol (OSP) exchanges between the People Line Clearhinghouse and associated gateway and gatekeeper devices are, by definition, SSL-secured; Digital Certificates are issued to each device as part of their inclusion within a People Line installation, and as part of the SSL security model.

Data stores, examples of which are People Line's LDAP directories, of subscriber data, and stores of subscriber email and other messages, are not directly accessible from the public Internet. These are maintained behind firewalls. Before being granted access to any data store, an "authentication server" authenticates the user with secure ID and password checking against an authentication database. Administrative access to data stores is inherently SSL-secured, including authentication phase data messages, and  web-enabled sessions and applications are similarly protected.

    The People Line Cleairnghouse and gateways and gatekeepers utilize PKI technology and encrypted certificates to authenticate callers, gateways and gatekeepers, IP Phones and other devices.
